An effluent purification installation of restricted capacity has >=1 one biological stage. This has a mechanical aerator/growth surface. A buffer stage before the biological stage has a weir so that feed can overflow from one to the other. The buffer stage is equipped with a bucket to transfer water to the biological stage. Used for purification by aerobic sludge treatment of small flows of effluent form up to a hundred inhabitants or the equivalent. Esp. when the flow is intermittent. The simple design leads to low construction costs. It works efficiently to give good purificn. at low cost. The energy required to run the equipment to small. The use of the bucket keepts the flow moving and prevents loss of the purification organisms when the feed rate is very low.
