51-Xanthylic acid is obtained by cultivating' at 20-40 DEG C. and a pH of 5.0 to 9.0, a microorganism which requires guanine for its growth in a medium comprising a source of guanine, e.g. guanine itself, nucleotide or nucleoside derivatives thereof, nucleic acids or yeast extract. Strains of Micrococcus glutamicus and Brevibacterium ammoniagenes are specified.
