IC engine exhaust afterburner with improved air-gas mixing - by interaction between jets meeting at right angles

Exhaust afterburner of IC engine has improved air: gas mixing is described in 25 33 648. However the gas leaves the flow reversing and igniter chamber (6) not only through an annular passage (8) but also through axial holes (9) in the radial partition supporting the inlet end of the outer wall of the passage. The gas jets flowing from these holes impinge immediately at rights angles on jets of secondary air, generally supplied under press,. from a blower, flowing through radial holes (10) in the outside wall into the afterburning chamber (11). The rapid mixing which results from this jet interaction speeds up combustion, permitting a reduction in size of the afterburning chamber.
