Alkali metal salts are solubilised by racting with an open chain polyethylene glycol diether of formula: RO-(CH2CH2O-)n-R' (where n is >=6; and R and R' are each alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl). These diethers have at least 7.0 atoms, each of which is sepd. by 2C atoms. Reaction may be effected in a solvent. Used for prepn. of conducting solns. of alkali metal salts, and esp. for effecting substitution reactions, the complexed alkali metal salts acting as catalysts in these reactions, e.g. replacement of bromide gps., by acetate using potassium acetate, or by cyanide using potassium cyanide, or iodide using sodium iodide. The open chain diethers are better catalysts in substitution reactions than macrocyclic ethers, and are more readily available.
