Liq. compsn. contains ammonium ions and/or metal ions of a Gp. I or II element, >=1 carboxylic acid chosen from formic, propionic, n-butyric, isobutyric, 2-methylbutyric, valeric, levulinic, acrylic and methacrylic acids and water. The ratio of acid to ammonium and/or metal ions is between 2-4:1 on the basis of chemical equivalents. Aliphatic carboxylic acids are used in industry and agriculture e.g. as preveservation agents for animals feeds and crops etc. to avoid growth of mildews, bacteria and cryptogames. They may be added to barley, wheat, oats, rye, maize, rice, hay, straw, silage, dried grass, dried beans, soya, bagasse, sunflower seed, cane sugar, colza, peanut, fish meal, bone meal waste, sawdust, animal excrement etc. They may be used to descale pipes and boilers, as buffers in photography and to treat cryptogamic infections such as Athletes foot. The solns. contg. Na and K ions may be used as anti-gelling agents and those contg. Cu ions for protection of wood and as fungicides in vineyards. The present compsn. reduces the obnoxious odour of the free acids to a minimum and avoids corrosion problems without loss of the desired, activity of the free acid. Complexes are formed between the acid and base which are stable in aq. soln. and reduce vapour loss w.r.t. to the free acid. When used as an antimicrobial pref. 0.1-5 wt % of the compsn. is used based on the substrate. |
