The container stacking machine has a packing plate travelling horizontally over the stack and an ejector thrusting a layer of containers from it onto the stack. The packing plate and the ejector are movable vertically for the height of a stack at least, and the plate can be movable into a position alongside, below or above the pallet accommodating the stack. there can be two packing plates, movable above each other, their movements being synchronised so that while one is being loaded the other is discharging a layer onto the stack. The ejector can be arranged to travel along an inclined or curved path.
