1479258 Potato extruder AMERICAN POTATO CO 18 Sept 1975 [19 Sept 1974] 38430/75 Heading B5A An extrusion machine for shaping rehydrated potato agglomerates comprises a cylinder 14, which initially is positioned over piston 22 (Fig. 2), via mounting 95, but in use is mounted as in Fig. 1 by means of lugs and slots 32 and 34 (Fig. 4) with piston 22 mounted on operating rod 24. Dehydrated potato and water is injected through opening 20 and is then extruded through dough forming element 38 comprising longitudinal strands of triangular section 4, 8 preferably made of nylon or other thermoplastic material. Dough extruded from the chamber is separated from the forming element by separating arm 39 which moves backwards and forwards across the exterior of the dividing structure. The piston 22, which is preferably constructed of nylon, has a thin lip 74 which is flexible enough to achieve a water tight seal. A flexible diaphragm 80 rests against the planar face 78 of the piston, secured by means situated off the centreline of the cylinder, so that in use as the piston is withdrawn from the dough after extrusion the lower portion of the diaphragm 80 pulls away from piston surface 78, thereby to admit air to the space formed between dough and piston to so prevent formation of a vacuum and consequent disruption of the remaining dough plug in the cylinder. |
