发明名称 COVERED CONTAINERS
摘要 1482184 Drinking vessels OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 21 June 1974 [21 June 1973] 27582/74 Heading A4A [Also in Divisions B2 B5 and B8] A container 10, e.g. bottle, jar or tumbler, is provided with at least two external plastics covering layers 23a and 25 in at least partial over-lying relationship with one another, the layer 23a being constituted by an in situ formed coating and the layer 25 being constituted by a preformed shrunk-on sleeve In one embodiment, powdered plastics is sprayed on to the neck portion 13 of a rotating heated glass bottle to form the layer 23a, Fig. 1 (not shown). The powdered plastics may be a thermoplastic, such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polystyrene, ethyl vinyl acetate, polyurethane, polyamide or copolymers of carboxylic acid with ethylene. The layer 23a may also be formed of thermosetting plastics, and may be sprayed-on in liquid form. A seamed or seamless sleeve of foamed or non foamed thermoplastic, which is preprinted or otherwise decorated to provide a label, is then telescoped over the bottle after the latter has again been heated, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), and heat-shrunk in a tunnel (28), Fig. 4 (not shown), into overlapping engagement with the coating 23a and beneath the base rim 8 of the bottle. In another embodiment, Figs. 6-9 (not shown), a sprayed-on coating 34a is also applied over the bottom portion of the bottle. In a further embodiment, Figs. 10-12 (not shown), substantially the entire external surface of the bottle is provided with a plastics coating 43a prior to application of the sleeve, by conveying the heated bottle through a fluidizing chamber 35. Electrostatic assistance may be used to aid formation of the coating. In the embodiment of Figs. 13-15 (not shown), the sleeve is shrunk on to the bottle first and then a sprayed-on coating 45a applied over the whole of the sleeve and the remaining exposed bottle surface or over the marginal portions of the sleeve and the remaining exposed bottle surface. In a modification of the above described embodiment, the coating is applied by conveying the sleeved bottle through a fluidizing chamber 38. The coating may be transparent or translucent to permit viewing of the label and/or the bottle contents. Instead of heat-shrinking the sleeve on to the container, the sleeve may be caused to contract on to the container by chemical action or solvent evaporation. Instead of a bottle, jar or tumbler, the container may be in the form of a metal can, or a spirally-wound paper container having metal ends.
