The rear of the vehicle recovery lorry is fitted with a crane boom (4) which lifts out of a flush setting in the load surface and swing upwards in a vertical plane. The end of the boom has a hinged extension with two side flaps (16) while double rollers at the end of the boom guide a winch cable (8). The winch enables the recovery team to pull cars out of ditches from either side of the road for pulling onto the lorry. The extension flaps can be used to lift the front wheels of further vehicles for towing away, so that two vehicles can be recovered at the same time. The flaps can also be raised into a vertical setting behind the load surface to prevent long vehicles from rolling off the load surface.
