The ventilation system for a deep mine includes a turbine (12) in a horizontal shaft (18) at the bottom of a vertical fresh air intake shaft (10) which expands and cools the air for distribution to the mine workings. The collector shafts for used air terminate in another horizontal shaft (19) which houses a blower (13) to force the collected air to a vertical extraction shaft (11). Inside the latter is a set of discharge fans (14) in series. The horizontal shafts (18, 19) are positioned in line so that the turbine (12) and blower (13) can share a common drive shaft to save energy. They can be interconnected electrically by an electro generator and an electro motor.
