The automatic material feeder for bar feeding is used especially in automatic lathes. The bar material is fed axially through a feed tube by a travelling plunger. The latter is connected by a connecting plate to the bar moving chain outside the tube. The plate passes through longitudinal slot in tube. The feeder eliminates disturbances in feed travel due to direct forces and centrifugal forces on machining bars of small diameter. The guide slot (5) for the plate has bar deflecting and stabilising covers (8) which are readily pushed aside by plate on its travel along the slot. The covers (8) hang on pins (9) passing through slots (10) in covers. This pin and slot arrangement guides covers. Covers can have sloping ends for contact with plate and for easy lifting and lowering.
