<p>The four wheel drive vehicle has the engine (15) and main gear box (16, 17) mounted over the front axle. A differential (14) couples the transmission to the front and rear axles via intermediate drive shafts (12, 13) with the position of the differential fixed by the geometry of the vehicle. The drive shaft (18) from the main gear box is positioned through the hollow input cog of the differential on a sliding fit. This enables a compact design to be achieved, with the differential very close to the main gear box. A set minimum length of main drive shaft is then possible, with its free end located on bearings (19) on the other side of the differential. The drive shaft passes through the differential via front and rear bearings.</p> |
