1228646 Super-conductors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 28 May 1968 [23 June 1967] 25516/68 Headings H1A A5 A8 and A4D A super-conductor strip comprises a layer of super-conductor material bonded between a layer of stainless steel and a layer of Cu or A1 having thicknesses inversely proportional to their respective moduli of elasticity. As shown, Fig. 1, a layer 12 of Nb 3 Sn produced by the diffusion reaction of a Sn coating on a Nb tape, is bonded between a stainless steel tape 11 and a copper tape 13 by means of a lead-tin solder. The copper tape 13 is twice as thick as the steel tape 11. The structure may be longitudinally slit into strips suitable for winding coils. The strips may be wound with the copper face either inside or outside with a bend diameter of down to 0À4 inch without degrading the super-conductive characteristics and strips can be joined by soldering the copper faces together. The super-conductor or material may be selected from the alloys and compounds of a parent metal such as Nb, Ta, Tc or V with Sn, Al, Si, or Ga. The parent metal may be alloyed with a solute metal, such as Zr. |
