<p>A control system is provided for use with a hydrodynamic retarder for providing braking to a vehicle by using engine lubricant as the working fluid. The system comprises a first pressure responsive, priority valve which functions to direct engine lubricant to a second, control valve from the engine lubricant pump only after the pressure in the engine lubricant system has achieved a sufficiently high level to supply the engine's requirements. In another embodiment, the first valve meters lubricant to both the engine and retarder at the same time by means of metering slots. The second control valve is operator-actuated and functions to direct lubricant through the heat exchanger, the lubricant filter, and then to the engine in one mode, or additionally by way of a hydrodynamic retarder in a second mode and thus to provide braking for the vehicle.</p> |
