Crankshaft of reciprocating IC engine - has non-return valve for lubricating oil in transverse bore

The big end bearing (3) of a reciprocating internal combustion engine is formed by a bearing cap bolted directly to a bearing half formed on the end of the connecting rod (1). There are oil passages (9, 10, 12) in the connecting rod through which oil passes to the gudgeon pin and piston. There is a non return valve (14) in these passages. The non return valve is formed by a ball (16) which opens and closes a hole in the wall of a cylindrical sleeve (17). The sleeve is inserted in a bore (13) drilled through the crankshaft at right angles to its longitudinal axis. This makes it possible to insert a non return valve in a single piece crankshaft for small high speed engines.
