Prodn. of lubricating oils and greases - using ferromagnetic particles in rotating magnetic field to disperse ingredients

Prodn. of lubricating oils and greases by dispersing thickners, additives and fillers in base fluids is carried out by means of ferromagnetic particles which form a vortex under the influence of a rotating magnetic field. The ferromagnetic particles can be of a magnetically soft or hard material (e.g. carbon steel, Ni or Co/Ni alloys) with a ratio of max. to min dimension of 6-20:1. The particles are pref. protected by a polymer coating. In the case of dispersing thickeners (e.g. metal soaps), these can be formed in situ by reaction of appropriate starting materials. High quality products can be produced in treatment times of a few seconds. Energy consumption is low. The process can be operated continuously and is readily automated.
