1524100 Oil filter DAIMLER-BENZ AG 12 Nov 1976 [27 Nov 1975] 47234/76 Heading BID A filter for the lubricating oil circuit of an I.C. engine comprises a housing 11, closed by a cover 18 and enclosing at least one annular filter element whose interior communicates with an outlet 31 in the base of the housing via a duct 32 in a post 33, which is fixed to the underside of the cover and makes a sliding fit in a bore 28 in the base. As shown the removable filter cartridge comprises an upper filter element 15, from which oil returns via aperture 33, duct 32 and passages 30, 31 to the engine oil sump, and a lower filter element 14 from which the filtered oil flows to the engine via channels 45 and 46. Inlet 50 communicates with space 36 outside elements 14, 15 via a thermostatic valve 52, which feeds the oil directly to space 36 at low oil temperature or via an oil cooler (not shown) and inlet 54 at higher temperatures. Space 36 communicates with duct 49 leading into bore 28 and the interior of element 14 also communicates with bore 28 at end 59, but both these connections are closed by the lower end of post 23 and sealing rings 55, 58 when the cover is in place. When the cover and post 23 are withdrawn, the oil drains from the housing via these connections to the outlet 31 and thence to the sump. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates a modification wherein sealing ring 55 is located on a reduced diameter portion of post 23. The filter cartridge includes grommets 38, 41, 44 which seal round post 23. |
