<p><PICT:1021960/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1021960/C6-C7/2> To ensure uniform heating across travelling metal strip coated with, for example, lacquer, plastics or electrolytically deposited tin, which strip has previously been heated to bring the central part of its width to a desired temperature, its side margins are raised to this temperature by an inductive heating arrangement comprising one or more loops arranged about the strip. In Fig. 3 a rectangular loop has its sides 20, 21 disposed on opposite sides of the strip 1 in which is induced currents flowing along the path 23, 24. The dimensions of the loop may be altered by making some or all of its sides telescopically adjustable, and a loop of trapeze or elliptic shape may be used. Two loops disposed entirely on opposite sides of the strip may be employed. Fig. 4 shows a space-saving arrangement in which, instead of being arranged before or after a roller 311, the supplementary inductor 25 comprises a rectangular loop 26, 27 shaped around this roller and the strip. The arrangements of Figs. 3 and 4 may be applied to apparatus in which the strip is previously heated by passing it through two sets 4, 6 of induction coils, Fig. 1 (not shown).</p> |
