The compsn. contains >=1 known extraction agent and at least surfactant which affects the interfacial tension of the phase thus accelerating the transfer materail. The surfactant is pref. a sulphonic acid, e.g. dinonylnaphthalene sulphonic acid. The composition opt. also comprises a carboxylic acid. The extraction proceeds relatively indendently of the anion in the aq. metal soln. It is used to separate Ni (II) and Co (II).
