1533957 Automatic control SUNTORY Ltd 1 March 1977 [3 March 1976] 8489/77 Heading G3N An electrical control system locates barrels horizontally, with a plug uppermost, in a store-rack by calculating barrel size and the circumferential position of the plug and determining the movements to a desired final position in the rack by a stacker crane. As shown, a barrel 10 is rolled from a lorry, not shown, to a position-pre-setting station 1 where it is received on rails 2. The barrel is aligned by spring- loaded guides and raised by a scissors mechanism 7 to permit rotation by wheels 8. The maximum and rail-engaging diameters are measured by pulses from transducers 14, 14' and the bung, bearing a red mask, identified by a photo-cell 13. A computer, not shown, controls a positioning and measuring sequence, whereby the plug is located, the railengaging diameter determined from the output of transducer 14' and the maximum diameter by the relative timing of pulses from transducers 14, 14'. The possible position in the store-rack, dependent on barrel size, is determined by the computer and from a recorded rolling path an initial angular position of the barrel is calculated and carried out by rotation of the wheels 8.
