<p>Traces of C2H2 (I) in anhydrous HCl are reduced by heating the HCl mixt. to 300-500 (340-375) degrees C in the presence of a molar excess (based on I) of O2 with a contact time of 0.05-5.0 (0.5-1.6) sec. Pref. (I) is present in amt. 0.6 mole % and reaction press is 30-110 psig. Process greatly reduces (I)-content (by 99+%) of anhydrous HCl without the formation of large amounts of Cl2. In an example, HCl (1.25 gmol/min) contg. 0.17% (I) and O2 (0.25 gmol/min), were fed to a heated reactor at 25 degrees/50 psig. Mixt. was heated to 450 degrees with contact time 0.8 sec. The (I) content of the effluent was 0.0002%.</p> |
