The coupling mechanism used for a lifeboat and a davit, has a hook which can hinge around a virtually horizontal axis. The hook can be coupled to an eye, and has a release arrangement for disengagement from the eye. The eye (12), in the closed position, engages on the hook (10) on the one side of a vertical surface through the hinge pin (9), whilst on the other side of this surface a movable connecting component (14) grips the hook (10).
