A cutting apparatus comprises a mechanism for longitudinally oscillating a resilientlycovered counter-roller 16 with respect to a cooperating cutting roller having, e.g., a serrated blade, in order to bring a fresh surface of the resilient covering into contact with the cutting means of the cutting roller. As described, the shaft 18 of the roller 16 which may be covered with polyurethane, is directly connected to a piston-rod 48 in an hydraulic cylinder 44 operated by pressure fluid from a pump 30. A further piston-rod 48 carries a striker plate 56 which operates a pair of switches 60, 62 arranged alternately to energize the solenoids 36, 38 of a reversing valve 34 to admit pressure fluid to the left or right sides of the hydraulic cylinder 44, and thus effect longitudinal oscillation of the roller. The switches 60, 62 are spaced for actuation -by the striker plate 56 to determine the limits of its travel and thus the amplitude of oscillation, which may be, e.g. <SP>1</SP>/ 16 inch per cutting cycle of the machine.</p> |
