It is possible to obtain particulate, alkaline detergents with efficacious washing properties coupled with a reduced phosphate builder content if the detergents contain 15 to 50 % by weight of an alkali metal hydrogen orthophosphate, 20 to 50 % by weight of a carbonate, bicarbonate or sesquicarbonate of an alkali metal and 5 to 40 % by weight of a synthetic surfactant, in each case relative to the weight of the total detergent. To further improve the washing properties, the detergents can contain compounds which prevent the deposition of insoluble calcium salts on the washed articles.
