1451108 Starch based papermaking filler compositions ASSOCIATED PORTLAND CEMENT MFRS Ltd 19 June 1974 [19 June 1973] 28989/73 Heading C3U [Also in Division D2] A method of making a filler, for use in papermaking, from finely divided mineral particles comprises preparing a rheologically dilatant suspension of at least 30% by weight of the total suspension of mineral particles in a solution of unretrograded starch exhibiting long flow properties, and comminuting the suspension into a gellant solution to form filiform entities, the gellant solutions being sufficiently concentrated to gel the starch solution before substantial dispersion of the mineral particles can take place. Preferably the starch solution contains an effective amount of an antiretrogradation agent; generally being organic non- ionic or cationic with an HLB of less than 10, or boric acid or borax. The mineral may be chalk whiting and a dispersion aid may also be added.
