Heat activated fire escape ladder - is held in continuous chains released to revolve on drums and counter drum

The fire escape system for a multiple storey building has continuous chains (5, 6) and rigid cross arms forming a flexible ladder (4). It is looped for storage when not in use, on running rails on a cantilever arm (8) on the roof. When made operative by heat sensors in the building (2), it is lowered across release drums revolving on the arm just outside a vertical row of windows or balconies, together with a counter drum reflecting the two counter-running chain lengths. It circulates continuously, under the weight of people entering it. The speeds of the two front release drums are controlled by a centrifugal brake.
