PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound for use as degreasing detergent with high energy efficiency of irradiation light or reaction efficiency, by irradiating a hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon raw material with light containing specific wave length in photochlorination of the compound by chlorine. CONSTITUTION:A hydrocarbon, or chlorinated hydrocarbon, particularly monochloromethane or 1,1-dichloroethane, is chlorinated by irradiation of light containing one with wave length of 420-460 nm in an energy ratio of not less than 40 % to give a chlorinated hydrocarbon, particularly dichloromethane or trichloroethane. The source of the above-mentioned light is properly a high-pressure mercury-arc lamp wherein a metallic halide such as a halide of W, Cr, or Ca is encapsulated. Particularly a high-pressure mercury-arc lamp wherein indium iodide is encapsulated can make the light with the above -mentioned wave length not less than 50%.
