<p>Polymers contain repeating units of formula in which X is H or CH3; R is 1-4C alkyl; m = 0 or 1; n = 1-4; and Z is a salt-forming anion, pref. a halide ion. Ureas of formula CH2=c(X)-CONHCO-NH(co)m(CH3)n-NR3+ are (co)polymerised in soln., suspension or emulsion, by heating, irradiation, or use of 0.001-1 wt% of a radical initiator. Polymerisation is pref. in presence of a solvent or diluent. Comonomers include (meth)acrylamide (opt N-substd.), esp N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-acrylamide and salts and quat. cps.; N-methylol(meth)acrylamide and ethers; amino-substd. (meth)acrylate esters, e.g. diethylaminoethyl acrylate, and salts and qual. cpds.; and vinyl esters. Use of (co)polymers contg (I) units as flocculation, sedimentation, dehydration, and retention aids is claimed. The (co)polymers give aq solns with low fiscosity. The polymers resist hydrolysis.</p> |
