PURPOSE:To harden rapidly the gelatin of a silver halide photographic material without adversely affecting its characteristics, by adding a specified vinyl aromatic polymer and a gelatin hardener to gelatin. CONSTITUTION:Vinyl aromatic polymer (a) of molecular weight 1,000-2,000,000 containing repeating units represented by the formula shown in the figure in an amount of about 0.01mol% or more, preferably 1mol% or more, and gelatin hardener (b), such as aldehydes or N-methylol compounds are added to gelatin. Mounts of polymer (a) and hardener (b) added to gelatin are 1-99wt%, preferably 1- 20wt% based on the total solid matter of gelatin and polymer, and 0.01-20wt%, preferably 0.1-10wt% based on the dry gelatin, respectively. In the formula, R is H, 1-6C alkyl, or halogen; M is H, alkali metal; alkali earth metal; or an organic group; X is 1-6C alkyl, alkoxy, alkylamino, or halogen; n is 0, 1, or 2; and n is 1 or 2. |
