The invention comprises an organobismuth compound, and its homo- and co-polymers, the formula of the compound being RaBi(OOCR1)3- a or Ar3Bi(OOCR1)2 wherein R, which may contain an inert substituent, is an alkyl or alkenyl radical containing less than 20 C atoms, a cycloalkyl radical or a monocyclic aryl radical, Ar is an unsubstituted or inertly substituted monocyclic aryl radical, R1 is a vinyl, a -alkylvinyl or vinylphenyl radical, and a is 1 or 2. Examples of preferred compounds are given. Inert substituents may be chloro, bromo, methyl, ethyl, methoxy, ethoxy, phenyl. The compounds RaBi(OOCR1)3- a are prepared by reacting a compound R1.COOM with RaBIX3- a or with R3Bi where M is H, NH4, Na or other metal, and X is OH, Cl or O. Compounds of the formula Ar3Bi(OOCR1)2 are prepared by reacting Ar3BiX12 with R1.COOM where M is as before and X1 is CO3, O, OH or Cl. The organo bismuth monomers may be co-polymerized with vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride or styrene, acrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylamide, acrylonitrile or methacrylamide, butadiene isoprene or chloroprene, maleic acid, diethyl maleate or diethyl fumarate. The preparation of the following are exemplified:-diphenylbismuth methacrylate, phenylbismuth bis-p-vinylbenzoate, triphenylbismuth bis-p-vinylbenzoate, a polymer of phenylbismuth bis methacrylate, a polymer of phenylbismuth bis-p-vinylbenzoate, of butylbismuth bis-acrylate, of triphenylbismuth bis-methacrylate, of dioctyl bismuth p - vinylbenzoate, diphenylbismuth methacrylate, and a copolymer of styrene and phenylbismuth bis-p-vinylbenzoate.ALSO:The invention relates to polymers of organobismuth compounds of the formula RaBi(OOCR1)3- a and Ar3Bi(OOCR1) 2 where R, which may contain an inert substituent, is an alkyl or alkenyl radical containing less than 20 C atoms, a cycloalkyl radical or a monocyclic aryl radical, Ar is an un unsubstistituted or inertly substituted monocyclic aryl radical, R1 is a vinyl, a -alkylvinyl or vinylphenyl radical and a is 1 or 2. The polymers may be homopolymers or copolymers with vinyl monomers, acrylic monomers, dienes, maleic acid, diethyl maleate or diethyl fumarate. Examples are given. Polymerization can be carried out in bulk, solution, emulsion or suspension, and may be initiated by benzoyl peroxide, di-t-butyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide, azo-bis-isobutyronitrile, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, persulphatebisulphite redox catalysts, or persulphate mercaptan redox catalysts; accelerators, chain transfer agents, surface active agents and suspending agents may also be present. Urethanes, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers, polyesters, polyamides, polyolefines, natural and synthetic rubbers, vinyl latex paints, and alkyd paints may be mixed with the compounds of the invention. Other compositions comprise these organo-bismuth polymers, together with talc, clay, diatomaceous earth flow, quaternary ammonium compounds, anionic, cationic or non-ionic surface-active agents, triarganotin compounds, pentachlorophenol, copper-8-quinolinolate, a bisphenol, o-phenylphenol, a polybrominated salicylanilide or zinc dialkyldithiocarbamate. The preparation of the following are exemplified; a polymer of phenyl bismuth bis-methacrylate, a polymer of phenylbismuth bis-p-vinylbenzoate, of butylbismuth bis-acrylate, of triphenylbismuth bis-methacrylate, of dioctyl bismuth p-vinylbenzoate, of diphenylbismuth methacrylate, and a copolymer of styrene and phenylbismuth bis-p-vinylbenzoate.ALSO:Bacteriocides and fungicides for use in adhesives, plastics, textiles, paper products, hemp, felts, detergent sanitizers, polyvinyl chloride foams, polystyrene foams, germicidal mattresses and cushions, comprise the organo bismuth compounds RaBi(OOCR1)3-a or Ar3Bi(OOCR1)2 or homo- or co-polymers (see C2J). Bacteriocidal and fungicidal compositions comprise these organo bismuth polymers together with talc, clay, Diatomaceous earth, flow, quaternary ammonium compounds, anionic, cationic or nonionic surface active agents, triorganotin compounds, pentachlorophenol, copper -8-quinolinolate, a bisphenol, o-phenylphenol, or polybrominated salicylanilide, zinc dialkyldithiocarbamate.ALSO:Organo bismuth compounds of the formula RaBi(OOCR1)3 - a and Ar3Bi(OOCR1)2 and their homo and co-polymers (see Division C2) are used in paper mill slime control processes.
