The snail trap has a container (10) which is fitted into the ground up to its rim and which contains a liquid bait which entices snails. Prior to capture the snails drink the liquid, lose their sense of balance and drown in the liquid. To facilitate the removal of carcases from the liquid, a sieve-like collecting device is disposed in the container, and rests on the bottom of the container. The collecting device can be lifted out of the container in a convenient manner by an upright (30) which projects above the rim (11) of the container, and a cover (40) is provided on the upright to protect the liquid bait from rain. If the upright is of hollow construction, it can accommodate a float (50) for indicating the level of the liquid.
