Titanium component for Ziegler polymerisation catalyst - comprises prod. of titanium tetra:chloride, aryl acid chloride, or -alkyl chloride and magnesium alcoholate

A modified Ti component for Zeigler-Natta catalysts are prepd. by mixing 100 pts. vol. RiCl4 (I) with a benzene deriv. (II) of formula R3p-Ph-CnH2nCr4R5Cl (where R3 is 1-4C alkyl, R4 is H or Cl, R5 is H or Cl or R4 and R5 together are O, n is 0-3 and p is 0-3) at 30-100 deg. C until a homogeneous liq. is formed; mixing the prod. continuously with magnesium alcoholate (III) of formula Mg(OD)2 (where D is 1-8C monovalent satd. aliphatic and/or aromatic hydrocarbon) with a particle size of 0.05-5.0 um in mol. ratio of (II):(III) of 1:12-1:1 for 0.2-4 hrs. at 40-180 deg. C, sepg. of the solids and continuously mixing 100 pts. wt. (I) with 0.2-100 pts. wt. of the above solid prod. and opt. up to 15 pts. wt. (II) for 0.1-5 hrs. at 40-180 deg. C and sepg. off the prod. The catalyst allows polymers to be prepd. at relatively high polymerisation temps., with improved morphological properties i.e. uniform particle size, reduction of fines, high bulk density and/or flow without detriment to stereoregularity and yield.
