The mechanism is intended for feeding the lead portion (8) of a metal strip (1) for insertion into a slot (10) of a winding drum (9). It comprises a strip clamping unit which has jaws (19, 21) to grip the strip on both sides and is movable in the direction of the slot by an endless chain or cable drive (11) or the like. This drive is arranged such that it activates the clamping unit when it moves towards the drum and releases it on its return stroke. A tensioning roller may be provided for the chain or cable. One clamp jaw may be formed by a pivoted (20) lever-operated (22) eccentric (21).
