摘要
923,837. Charging melting - furnaces. INLAND STEEL CO. Jan. 20, 1961 [Jan. 27, 1960], No. 2350/61. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A fluid-cooled valve comprises a body 5 having a valve seat 23, a tubular valve stem 28 extending into the body and terminating in a hollow shield portion 30, a valve head 40 detachably mounted on the shield portion, means 71, 72 pivotally supporting the stem for movement of the head into and out of engagement with the seat, and means 93, 95 for circulating a cooling fluid through the stem and shield portion whereby the valve seat and head are protected from heat by the shield when the valve is closed. In the preferred embodiment, two valves are provided to form a lock for admitting iron ore to a melting hearth or reducing chamber, the valves being operated alternately by separate hydraulic cylinders 86 connected to the stems by levers 82. Each stem has a heat-resistant packing 61 adjusted by screws 63, a fluid-cooled jacket 57 and a shield 50 of refractory material. The cooling fluid, which may be water, is supplied to the shield portions 30 through flexible hoses and pipes 90 to stainless steel, the annular space between the pipe and stem forming a return passage. A pin 36 secures each valve head to a spherically-headed extension 32 of the corresponding shield portion while each valve seat member 19 is removable from the body which has a protective coating 45 of abrasive resistant refractory material and lateral openings (not shown) to provide access to the valve heads.
