The system includes a motor/generator assembly in which a three-phase synchronous motor 4 is coupled to a synchronous generator 8. A DC supply is applied to an inverter circuit 14 which gives a three-phase output to the motor 4. The inverter circuit 14 includes controllable rectifiers 16 which are controlled by firing pulses orientated in phase relationship with the terminal voltage of the motor 4. The DC supply may be provided by further rectifiers 20 or a battery 22.
