In a process for the production of an ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic nitrile, a gaseous mixture containing an ethylenically unsaturated organic compound, HCN and oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen is contacted at 100-500‹ C. with a catalyst produced by treating Pd metal on a Pd compound with a reducing sulphur compound at - 10 to 1200‹ C. Preferred unsaturated organic compounds are ethylene, propylene, n and iso-butenes, and vinyl chloride. Examples describe the preparation of acrylonitrile, α-# and # : # dimethylacrylonitrile, ethylacrylonitrile, chloracrylonitrile, fumaronitrile, methacrylonitrile and crotononitrile. |
