<p>The casing of a battery or accumulator having several shallow cells stacked between a pair of clamps is reinforced by a combination of layers of webbing and/or straps made from strong fibres and wound about the core under constant tension using a jig capable of biaxial rotation. The reinforced layers are enclosed in an external casing of moulded resin. Esp. for mfr. of cells which are stored or installed dry and are 'self-charging' when they are subsequently primed with electrolyte. Suitable for power systems in weapons, satellites etc. where loss of electrolyte could cause damage and the casing must be strong enough to withstand hydrostatic pressure from enclosed electrolyte subject to temp. variations. The reinforced casing is compact with a high strength/wt. ratio.</p> |
