The device consists of a balance (1) which is placed in high vacuum with one of its weighing pans (4) surrounded by a cooling container (10) whose base has a diaphragm to allow a vapour jet to enter, and of an evaporator (19) situated underneath the diaphragm. The evaporator (19) is inserted in a mounting (21) which is intended for evaporators (19) of various depths. The height of the cooling container (10) can be adjusted in such a way that the spacing between the top of the evaporator (19) and the diaphragm in the cooling container (10) always remains constant. <IMAGE>
