The autonomous elevator with a cab for climbing along a mast comprises two gripping forks (35) and (36), each comprising a central arm (39a) and two lateral arms (40) and (41). The lateral arms can pivot about fixed axes, whilst the central arm (39a) is extendible, its path being constant regardless of the diameter of the mast on which the elevator is working. The opening and closing movements of the pieces constituted by the forks and their corresponding arms are controlled by hydraulic or pneumatic jacks and coordinated with the movements of a vertical positioning jack (56), so as to cause the elevator to rise or descend along the mast. The elevator is used for climbing along masts used for conveying electrical power, telephone links, radio or television aerials, and masts carrying apparatuses used for the lighting and sound systems of large outdoor areas. <IMAGE>
