A process and apparatus for the combustion of solid fuel in which the combustion gases of a red-hot bed of a batch-operating combustion boiler or heater formed on a grate (18), are directed to a smoke flue (16) through the red-hot bed in counter current to the heat flow in order to heat them to their ignition temperature.
