An ether is prepared by dehydrating the corresponding acyclic alcohol in the liquid phase, at 90-170 DEG C. and at a pressure sufficient to maintain the reaction mixture in the liquid state, in the presence of a cation-exchange resin derived from styrene or divinyl benzene and bearing strong inorganic acid radicals of which the "equivalent pH" is at most 2, the contact time of the alcohol with the catalyst being from 10 minutes to 10 hours. The "equivalent pH" is the pH of 100 ml. 0.1 N aqueous NaCl brought into contact with 10 milliequivalents of the resin. The resin is preferably of the polystyrene sulphonic type in its "hydrogen" form. The reaction may be carried out batchwise, by agitating the alcohol with the resin, or continuously, by passing the alcohol through a bed of the resin. The starting material may be a mixture of alcohols and may contain water and/or the corresponding ether. Examples describe the dehydration of butyl and ethyl alcohols. |
