The cover (16) provides an even temperature distribution and a nearly uniform moisture gradient. This reduces the energy consumed by the drying process and allows use of a higher temperature in the timber than has been used for conventional drying. The timber stock (14) is disposed on a carrier (13) in a treatment room (10) which is irradiated by a microwave source (11). The internal walls provide high reflectivity to microwave radiation and prevent leakage of microwave energy from the room. To avoid field distortions by the metal wheels of the carrier they are separated from the stacked timber by a distance equal to two wavelengths of the microwave radiation in a vacuum. Air is circulated by a system (12) including a ventilator (18) producing low circulation speed and a cooling element (17) to condense moisture removed from the treatment room.
