A stringed instrument is described which does not consist of wood as customary, but of a transparent plastic material, such as acrylic glass. In the case of a design as a violin, virtually the complete instrument except for the strings can be produced from this transparent material. A preferred manufacturing process comprises the fabrication of three integral parts, namely the top with ribs, fingerboard with neck and scroll, and finally the base. These parts are produced by casting the plastic material into appropriate moulds and curing the material in these moulds, and are then assembled, preferably with the use of a self-curing polymer. Transparent instruments in various colour shades can be produced by appropriate dyeing of the plastic material. Special light effects are obtainable if small illumination bulbs which can be inserted into the instrument are provided.
