PURPOSE:To easily detect a character area from a space on a sheet of paper of a free format, on which characters and pictures are mixedly recorded, by utilizing a character that characters and pictures are usually arranged with periodicity. CONSTITUTION:An original picture 1 is converted into electric signals in accordance with the light part and shade part of the original picture 1 by a photoelectrically converting section 2 and successively stored in a storage section 3. When the whole part of the original picture 1 is converted into electric signals, a periodicity detecting section 4 starts the operation and detects areas having periodicity in the course of successive reading out of the picture signal stored in the storage section 3. The detecting section 4 sends information related to the position of the areas, from which periodicity is detected, to a switching section 5 and the switching section 5 sends picture signals to a character recognizing section 7 based on the information and encodes the information. On the other hand, picture signals of areas, from which no periodicity is detected, are sent to a picture processing section 6 by the switching section 5 and the same processing as usual is performed on them. |
