A carpet cleaner comprises a motor driven brush 16, mounted for rotation about a vertical axis, supporting a sponge pad 23, a fixed abutment 28 mounted to compress a portion of said pad 23, conduit means 27 to deposit liquid detergent on said pad 23 so producing foam as the detergent containing portion of said pad is rotated against said abutment, and means for directing said foam to the floor adjacent said brush 16. In one embodiment detergent liquid from a reservoir carried on the pivotably mounted handle 13 is controllably deposited via conduit 27 on the polyurethane foam pad 23 carried on the back of the brush 16, rotated by motor 17 through gear 19. Conical roller 28, rotatably mounted on axle 29 attached to frame 18 compresses a portion of the impregnated pad 23 as the latter rotates past it to produce a dry foam which is directed by integrally formed walls 31 and 32 (not shown) down in between the two brushes to be picked up by the bristles and worked into the carpet. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the pad 37 is mounted on the underside of the brush back 35a and is compressed by a nylon abutment member 40 supported against rotation by attachment to a stub shaft 36 on which the brush 35 is mounted. The detergent liquid is delivered to the pad 37 from conduit 27 through openings 35h. The foam produced is directed towards the bristles 35e by an annular deflecting skirt 35g. In a third embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) the abutment member comprises a U-shaped rib, extending upwardly from a rug scrubbing attachment mounted on the scrub shaft to engage with the floor inside the annular bristle array.
