Bulk material, small parts, packaging and the like having a smooth, uneven, rough surface or having poorly accessible sites are cooled and then brought into a space with high atmospheric humidity containing a microbicidal gas or gas mixture and whose temperature is so high that a film of water of condensation is formed at the surface of the material to be made germ-free, in which film the microbicidal gas is dissolved and acts. Since the onset of action of these gases is quicker in an aqueous solution than in the dry the treatment time can be shortened and pressurised containers are superfluous. Once the desired reduction in the organism count has been reached the material is dried in a stream of air, any residues of the microbicidal gases being removed at the same time.
