摘要 1,042,786. Electric calculating apparatus. BELL PUNCH CO. Ltd. March 16, 1965 [March 21, 1964], No. 10975/65. Divided out of 1,042,785. Heading G4A. In an electronic calculating machine comprising digit entry means K (Fig. 1, not shown), and a register R, when the machine is in a first state with terminal N energized, the entry of numbers into the register R is determined by the digit entry means K, whereas when the machine is set to a second state with terminal N energized, a predetermined number is entered into the register R independently of the digit entry means K. Addition.-In a first method terminals M, XT and N are energized and the first number is set on the keyboard K. Timing devices TR and TK are stepped by the P9 pulse of a pulse generator PG and when a gate KG corresponding to an order in which a digit key K is depressed is energized by the corresponding t pulse from the timing device TK, a bi-stable device KC is set to KA opening a gate G6 to permit the remaining PG pulses of that cycle to enter in the counting device R rendered operative by the energized T line from the timing device TR. The second number is similarly entered on the keyboard K and added to the register R, with a carry flip-flop CS being set when a counter R passes through zero, energizing the output CSO to pass a pulse through a gate G9 to the register in the next position. In a second method terminals M, +, XT and N are made positive and the digits of each number are entered sequentially into the register R using multiplier keys MK. The t12 pulse of each cycle of the timing device TK opens a gate SKG to set the bi-stable device KC to KA, opening a gate G6 and passing one subsequent pulse to the register R before the bi-stable device KC is unset to KB. The TO pulse of timing device TR opens a gate BRG7 passing all the H pulses through a gate G10 until the inputs to a gate CG6 are energized, corresponding to the complement to the MK digit, setting the device BC and C + . Thus the buffer store BR contains the complement of the number to be added and is stepped once in each cycle through a gate BRG8, corresponding to the stepping of the register R, until it registers zero energizing the B output which stops the pulse generator PG through a gate SG3. The relative positions of the timing devices TR and TK step to the next position of the register R and subsequent digits are entered. Subtraction.-Two methods corresponding to the two methods of addition may be used with the terminal S energized instead of + and the subtracted numbers consequently being added in complement form. Multiplication.-In a first method a multiplicand entered on the keyboard K is multiplied by a digit on the multiplier keys MK in the same manner as the first form of addition but with the buffer store BR also registering the complement of the digit set on the multiplier keys MK and stepping one position at each addition of the multiplicand into the register R, and stopping the pulse generator PG when the BR reaches zero. In a second method the terminals +, XT and N are rendered positive and a multiplicand entered on the keyboard K is multiplied by a multiplier set in the register R. The complements of successive digits of the multiplier are set in the buffer store BR which is stepped up to zero each time the multiplicand is added into the right-hand counters of the register R. Simultaneously, the corresponding digit is removed from the register. The timers TR and TK are cycled to add the multiplicand into the appropriate register counters and the machine is stopped when all the multiplier digits have been removed and the buffer store BR divisor entered on the keyboard K is successively subtracted from the dividend in the register R until the remainder is negative, whereupon the divisor is added back once into the register, the quotient being accumulated in the left-hand side of the register R. Initially, one pulse passes through a gate G4 to the counter R1 and subsequently, for each register position, a number of pulses corresponding to the complement of the digit in that keyboard position are added into the register together with a carry pulse from the previous position as shown by the set flip-flop CS. Successive cycles of similar subtractions are repeated until at the end of the twelfth period T12 of the timer TR the carry store CS remains unset indicating a nine in the final position and a negative remainder. The divisor is added back into the register R in the next cycle and the number of subtractions indicated by the complemented buffer store BR is entered into the left-most register counter. Similar subtractions and additions are repeated for the ten positions of the dividend and the machine is then stopped. Shift.-Right shift is achieved by multiplication by one of a number in the register according to the second method of multiplication with positive potentials at terminals +, XT and N. Left shift is achieved by division by one with terminals D, +, XT and N energized.
