A ball and socket joint for wheel pivot joints and steering linkages of motor cars, comprises a ball part 3 integral with a stud 2 extending through a bore 5 in a resilient or elastic synthetic ball segment 4, wherein the ball segment 4 is radially slotted to divide the segment into parts with bridging pieces extending between the parts, the bridging pieces undergoing plastic deformation when the joint is heavily loaded. The ball segment of Fig. 2 (not shown), has alternate slots extending inwards from the outside nearly to the bore 5 and extending outwards from the bore 5 nearly to the outside. The ball segment of Fig. 3 (not shown), has slots extending inwards from the outside, the bases of the slots not being parallel with the segment bore and the stud and the distance from the slot base to the bore being greater near the ball part 3. The ball segment of Fig. 4 (not shown), has slots extending outwards from the bore so as to form recesses which axially extend not as far as the ball part 3 and the lower end of the segment. The ball segment may have slots according to Fig. 3 and to Fig. 4; arranged alternately. The ball segment of Fig. 5 (not shown) is radially divided by slots into e.g. three sectors, small projections forming the bridging pieces being provided adjacent the bore on one of each pair of facing sector surfaces to abut the facing sector surface. The ball segment of Fig. 6 (not shown) is also divided by slots into sectors which interengage. One of two adjacent sectors has a rectangular bridging projection which engages a further bridging projection extending from the base of a recess corresponding to the rectangular projection formed in the other sector. The further projection may be provided on the rectangular projection so that it contacts the base of the recess. |
