Nylon or polyethylene terephthalate continuous multifilament yarn is false-twist crimped by use of a friction-twisting head, Fig. 1 (not shown) comprising a rotary annular component 2 the bore 3 of which merges into outwardly flared ends presenting convex friction-engendering surfaces 2a, 2b, which engage and support yarns Y, Y1, travelling diagonally through the component. The twist effect is increased by passage of yarn(s) through successive, aligned heads, Fig. 2 (not shown). Two or more oppositely false-twisted ends may be consolidated into one yarn. A modified head, Figs. 3-5 (not shown) comprises releasably interlocked portions 2c, 2d, (each providing a friction surface) with a common driving gear or pulley 4 therebetween and each mounting a fixed, part-circular, shielded, heating or cooling element 8. A twisting machine, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) comprises sections S each incorporating heaters, aligned twisting heads and wind-up and take-off bobbins 16 and 14 at the front and rear. The heating elements may be retractable and associated with automatically openable and closeable heat-retaining covers (not shown). |
