PURPOSE:To manufacture needlelike SiC or a needlelike SiC-graphite composite at a low cost by heating chaff or a starting material mixture of chaff with a graphite product in an atmosphere where oxidation is inhibited. CONSTITUTION:Chaff or chaff wetted with 30% soln. of phenolic resin as a graphite product in acetone is filled into a stainless steel vessel, and the vessel is sealed and buried in fine coal to carry out carbonization at about 800 deg.C. The vessel is buried again in fine coal and heated to 2,000-2,500 deg.C in a reducing atmosphere where oxidation is inhibited. Very fine needlelike SiC grown on the surface of the carbonized chaff, and needlelike SiC or a needlelike SiC-graphite composite usable widely as a starting material for sintering, a reinforcing material, a dispersant, an electronic material, etc. is obtd. at a low cost. |
